Grand Canal I Venice

Rafal Krol

Grand Canal, Italian Canale Grande, main waterway of Venice, Italy, following a natural channel that traces a reverse-S course from San Marco Basilica to Santa Chiara Church and divides the city into two parts.

Rafal Krol was born and grew up in Bielsko-Biala, Poland. In 2004 when Poland become a member of the European Union and the borders were open, he came to Ireland and have lived here since.

He bought my first camera (small compact Pentax S30) to record his stay abroad the same year. After the initial fascination of having a camera and taking photographs of everything everywhere, he began to focus on minimalistic black and white seascape and landscape photography for the past few years. Nature, the sea coast and the mountains always have been inspiring to me. These are places which he enjoy visiting most, where he can rest and restore my vital energy.

Most of his work is black and white, he believe the lack of colour allows an observer to focus more on the frame and composition. He mostly use medium format cameras, Hasselblad and Holga.
